The partial government shutdown at the Department Of Homeland Security, which has been one of the few ways Democrats can hold the Trump administration accountable, has now gone on over a month. There might not be any end in sight, as Trump has reportedly rejected a deal with Senate Democrats to fund every agency except ICE.
Meanwhile, TSA agents, who haven’t been paid since February, are calling out and quitting. So Trump has decided to send his ICE goon squads to airports to own the libs, as GOP Congressman James Comer essentially put it.
On this edition of The Weekly Assignment, Susan J. Demas and Sam Osterhout wonder: Will ICE’s presence make anyone feel safer in the wake of the harm they’ve caused across the country?
Susan and Sam also welcome Joan Esposito, veteran Chicago journalist and radio host with Heartland Signal, who urges Democrats to stand firm against Trump’s calls for passing the SAVE America Act in exchange for reopening DHS.
Joan also gives a stellar recap of the winners and losers from last weeks primary in Illinois. How influential was Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s endorsement during last week’s primaries and how might that play for him as rumors swirl about his own 2028 aspirations?
