Where to even start with this speech? Well, for one thing, it was long. The longest ever — which is probably the only thing that Trump is hoping anyone remembers from last night. What can we say? Our president is a size queen.
To make a bad night just a little bit better, Lincoln Square turned to an all-star panel of Michael Fanone, Maya May, Rachel "The Doc" Bitecofer 📈ðŸ”, Joe Sudbay, Edwin Eisendrath, Joan Esposito ChicagoStyle, and Max Burns. And of course, your old pals, Sam Osterhout and Susan J. Demas, were on hand to try to make sense of Trump’s word salad.
Our intrepid panel also stuck around for the Democrats’ rebuttal given by newly inaugurated Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger. You’ll want to stick around til the end for the line of the night from Max about Trump and Kid Rock.
But before Trump spoke, we talked to a few of the people who attended the address to highlight the ways this administration’s policies have been hurting people, communities, and businesses.
Maya spoke with Raiza Contreras about the plight of her teenage son, Dylan, who was detained by immigration agents nine months ago and is being held in a Pennsylvania facility. She was the guest of Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
And Susan interviewed Congressman Marc Pocan (D-Wis.) and his guest, Doug Rebout, a lifelong farmer who’s president of the Wisconsin Soybean Association, about the impact Trump’s trade policy has had on farmers.
Tune in for some jokes, some drinking, and a whole lot of fact-checking of Trump’s lies about the economy, the SAVE Act, AI data center, his health care plan, and more.
And help us to continue to call out Trump’s lies during this crucial midterm election year.
