Trump's Desperation Is Dangerous | It's the Democracy, Stupid with Edwin Eisendrath & Tom Nichols

MAGA is a shrinking minority that's still trying to bend democracy to its will.

Trump’s spectacle with 800 generals looked less like strength and more like insecurity. What should have been a reaffirmation of civilian-military norms turned into a partisan loyalty test, undercutting two and a half centuries of tradition. The message wasn’t about readiness, it was about obedience — and it exposed how fragile the line has become between politics and the military.

That fragility is showing up in American cities, too. In Chicago, ICE raids backed by helicopters and armored vehicles turned an apartment building into a war zone, sweeping up citizens and immigrants alike. It’s a tactic designed to shock and intimidate, not protect, and it leaves communities more alienated and afraid. The more these raids are normalized, the easier it becomes to accept military-style repression as standard policing.

Even abroad, Trump is searching for distractions. Declaring “armed hostilities” against cartels and sinking boats is less strategy than spectacle — explosions meant to keep attention away from tariffs, inflation, and approval ratings in freefall. Without institutional checks, each stunt tests how much more power can be grabbed without consequence.

Yet, desperation is baked into the play. The more extreme the shows of force, the clearer it becomes that a shrinking minority is trying to bend a sprawling democracy to its will. Allies abroad no longer fear America so much as pity it, a country once counted on now adrift. What happens next depends on whether citizens still act like citizens — willing to use the tools of democracy before they’re gone.

Donald Trump’s Imperial Presidency Is Imperiled

I’ve always believed that the theory that Donald Trump is, at his core, a sulky toddler, downplays the extreme danger he poses — not just to America, but the entire world order.
