Former CNN anchor Don Lemon, has been arrested along with fellow independent journalist Georgia Fort. Skye Perryman, president and CEO of Democracy Forward, talked to Maya May Friday afternoon about this shocking attack on the First Amendment.
Perryman notes journalists, especially Black journalists, have been targets of the White House for exposing the realities of their harmful policies. She also blasts Trump officials for lying about what journalists and protesters can and cannot do when holding them to account.
“They’re first of all allowed to cover the protest in a nonviolent way. And that’s what we know Don Lemon was doing. He wasn’t there actually to protest. By the way, protesters have rights, too. But he wasn’t there as a protester. He was there as an observer, as a journalist. That’s a fundamental First Amendment freedom.”
