In Vermont, a judge ordered people detained by ICE released. Why would the judge release violent criminals? Well … because they weren’t violent criminals. They weren’t even criminals. ICE broke in their house without a proper judicial warrant, arrested them, despite the fact that they were not the people ICE was looking for.
They never should have been arrested in the first place, but the fact that they were released is a small win. Upside.
On the downside, though, we have the destruction of the DOJ’s credibility, the Supreme Court’s over-reliance on the shadow docket, the DHS purge of immigration judges, and lowering of standards across the board in the Trump administration.
In the midst of all the chaos in the world, we need to talk about what’s happening here. ICE hasn’t gone away. Trump’s project to destroy our system of justice is still underway.
