L.A. Mayor Karen Bass Talks Standing Up to ICE and her Reelection Campaign

"I would have never imagined that I have to protect myself from my own government. The magnitude, the brutality, the callousness, the inhumanity, and the economic impact has never been to this scale."

June 6, 2025. That’s a date Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass says she will never forget because that’s when Donald Trump invaded the city with his ICE goons. And they’re still very much there. Bass spoke with Susan J. Demas on Lincoln Square to discuss how her administration has taken action to hold the rogue agency accountable.

She notes that Los Angeles was lucky to already have a strong immigrant rights infrastructure in place before ICE’s assault. She also credits her time in Congress during Donald Trump’s first term as a reason why she’s been able to fight back against his administration.

Bass is up for reelection in June in a crowded field. She talked about issues facing the city, including affordability, homelessness, and rebuilding after the fires. And she discussed why she’s been a big target for right-wing media, and why the New York Post spends so much time covering her.
