The news that the Senate passed the budget came in while
was live on-air. It’s not that it was a surprising result; it’s just that the bill is so dramatically catastrophic that it takes your breath away, even if you know it’s coming. The Senate version cuts over $1 trillion from Medicaid over the next decade, which includes cuts to CHIP, kicking kids off insurance. By some estimates, it could result in nearly 12 million Americans losing health insurance coverage by 2034, although some say that number could stretch to as many as 20 million.
And if that’s not bad enough, the CBO says it could add nearly $3.3 trillion to the deficit. It’s the largest rollback in health coverage in American history, and probably the most complete redistribution of wealth from the bottom to the top.
It’s immoral. It’s absurd. And we are all but helpless to stop it at this point. But, damnit, that doesn’t mean we don’t try.
This monstrosity goes to the House next. Make your calls now. Our representatives need to know that there will be a price to pay for passing this thing. It may come at the ballot box, and it may come in the court of public opinion. But whoever voted for this bill needs to know that they will go down in history as the cause of untold human suffering.
