Last night, you probably started to hear about Poland shooting down Russian drones that violated its airspace during an attack on Ukraine.
"The sheer amount of these drones means that this is not something that is an accident,” says Navy Commander Bobby Jones (Ret.). “These drones ... in Polish airspace seems pretty deliberate."
Leaders from across Europe have condemned this as yet another escalation from Russia. And this comes just weeks after Trump invited Putin onto American soil for peace talks — without Ukraine — which have, so far, produced nothing.
LIVE from Ukraine: Tim Mak on the Trump-Putin Summit Fiasco
"Where to start with this fiasco? The kind of large-scale reaction from here in Kiev is one of absolute disgust,” Tim Mak told Lincoln Square Executive Editor Susan J. Demas in a Saturday morning interview from Ukraine.
Bobby went live early this morning to break down for us what we know — and what we don’t — and what this means for our national security and the international order.
But that wasn’t the only big international news on Tuesday. There also was an Israeli strike in Qatar targeting Hamas leaders — even though Qatar has been the main intermediary trying to negotiate a peace deal between Israel and Hamas for a war that has now dragged on almost two years. Bobby points out that Trump said he was not informed of the strike beforehand and was “disappointed” by it. And he notes that the Hamas leaders targeted are reportedly still alive, which raises the question of whether the strike was even worth it, given the diplomatic damage it caused.
These two events — the drone strikes in Poland and the Israeli strike in Qatar — show a blatant disrespect for the United States by both Russia and Israel. The U.S. appears to be out of the loop, and it's unclear what the next steps will be.
Bobby’s absolutely right — this is a critical time to follow reliable news sources to get a clear picture of what's happening. Stay with us on Lincoln Square today.
