Half the Country Doesn't Feel Safe under Trump | Punching Up with Maya May

Are you safer than you were six months ago?

So we’ll start out with some good news, I guess? You won’t have to take your shoes off at the airport anymore, thanks to a new TSA rule (although I can report that folks who weren’t in the TSA Precheck line at Detroit Metro today were still walking around barefoot at security).

That’s all well and good, says Dr. Nola Haynes, a Political Science Professor at Georgetown and national security specialist, but it also could be a tactic by DHS Director Kristi Noem to distract Americans from more pressing national security concerns. Like the $175 billion in Trump’s budget for ICE that sets up a national, militarized police force, perhaps?

And to make matters worse, the Trump administration has leveled huge budget cuts to education and research, which could compromise nation security by hindering American innovation in cybersecurity, quantum computing, and AI.

Nola also talks to Maya May about the fact that Trump is upside down on the question of public safety. Data shows that 49% of Americans feel less safe under the current administration, while only 38% feel safe. With heavily-armed, fully-masked ICE agents snatching breastfeeding mothers, kids at school, and parishioners at churches, it’s not hard to see why.
