Former Ambassador Bob Rae: The End of American Alliances? | The History of the Present

Under Trump, America turns its back on its allies and embraces dictators.

Bob Rae, the former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations, joined Brian Daitzman of The Intellectualist for a blunt look at the growing rupture between the United States and its closest allies on this edition of History of the Present.

Drawing on decades of experience in Canadian politics and diplomacy, Rae breaks down what Trump’s tariffs and threats against America’s traditional alliances mean for relationships that once seemed unshakable.

It’s hard to accept we live in a world where America is stepping away from its allies and moving closer to dictators like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, but it’s true. Rae recounts watching the U.S. side with Russia, North Korea, and Belarus against Ukraine at the UN, a moment he calls an incredible betrayal, and warns that the consequences of that shift are only beginning to sink in.
