Beverly Gage, Yale historian and author of This Land Is Your Land: A Road Trip Through U.S. History, took a trip to First Draft with Susan J. Demas to talk about her new book and celebrate the places – both well known and obscure – that are truly part of our nation’s DNA.
Professor Gage visited a variety of landmarks, from museums to battlefields to amusement parks, describing the excitement of seeing destinations that shaped America. While not all of them remain front-and-center, they continue to thrive, embracing the struggles that once defined them and moving forward with a promise of tomorrow.
“One of the things that you realize in a deep way … is the fact that this is such a big country. You really feel that and experience that when you’re driving in a way that’s quite different than if you’re just flying around or sitting at home. … It suggests some of the challenges that have been at the core of the United States, from whose land is it actually to the incredible array of people and cultures and geographies and landscapes that are all supposed to be contained within this thing that we call the United States of America,” Gage said.
Fill up the tank, grab some snacks, and buckle up for a road trip through history on First Draft with Susan J. Demas and Beverly Gage, author of This Land Is Your Land: A Road Trip Through U.S. History.
