SCOTUS Cases to Keep an Eye On | First Draft with Susan J. Demas & Slate's Mark Joseph Stern

“Most parties walk into the Supreme Court not knowing if they have anybody in their camp. Trump walks in knowing he’s starting with two or three [justices] in his pocket.”

If you ask Slate’s Mark Joseph Stern if he can predict when we might get decisions from some of the most anticipated cases before the Supreme Court this term, he’ll tell you, “I would not put money on big stuff coming down sooner [but] I would not be surprised if it does.”

Mark is a senior writer with Slate where he focuses on legal issues before SCOTUS, as well as cases across the country. He joined Susan J. Demas on First Draft to talk about key cases deciding issues involving voting rights, birthright citizenship, mail-in voting, gay and trans conversion therapy, and more. And he put this this very conservative court into perspective with others in history.

And while there’s certainly been a MAGAfication of the Court with its conservative majority, Stern says, “There are still some areas where they’ll break from Trump, sometimes just to show him that they are independent and still have their own power. … And those are the areas where there’s hope for Democrats in a decision that’s not full MAGA.”
