Protests in Minneapolis and across the country are growing, as the Trump regime tightens its grip on power using state-sponsored violence. The American people are activating, and now our state and local leaders are following suit.
California Assemblyman Isaac Bryan has introduced legislation in his state that would limit the ability of local law enforcement officers to work for ICE when they are off-duty from their day jobs. It’s a common sense piece of legislation. As Bryan noted, as an Assemblyman, he’s barred from moonlighting in other government agencies.
While this might seem like a relatively minor technical issue, the problem it addresses is very real. Imagine being confronted by a paramilitary force of masked goons. Who do you turn to for help if you can’t tell the good guys from the bad guys?
If the officers who are meant to protect you are working with the goons, you find yourself in a bind, and law enforcement finds itself in a crisis of trust.
Assemblyman Bryan’s background has prepared him for this moment. In this conversation with Sam Osterhout he tells his story, and makes the case that we are living through an authoritarian takeover.
