Democracy Is No Longer in Decline Around the World— with One Glaring Exception | It's The Democracy, Stupid with Edwin Eisendrath & EIU Reports Chief Economist Constance Hunter

The United States has seen a decline in civil liberties and a decline in political culture.

Every year, the Economist Intelligence Unit releases a Democracy Index, which looks at the health of democracies in over 160 countries around the globe. And for close to a decade, the index painted a bleak picture of democracy in decline.

Now there are some bright spots in its 2025 report, with many countries reversing course. However, there’s plenty to be concerned about, with governments like the Trump Administration chipping away at civil liberties and human rights.
