This modest proposal was originally posted in late January, 2026, well before the April 15th tax deadline.

Not even  one senior Democratic leader cared. The Democrats have no game plan to prevent Trump from rigging, stealing, canceling or annuling the Midterm elections this November.

At a minimum, The Blue state governors should be training their national guards to prevent  Trump's ICE goons from preventing or interfering with our state election process.

Why aren't the Blue State governors back to as a united group organizing their National Guards in order to have them ready to combat Trump's attempt to use ice to prevent voting or to steal ballots  after the voting?

Here's what I wrote in late January:

Unfortunately  most Democrats are still drinking the Kool-Aid that says that the midterm elections will be normal and they will take control of the House  and maybe even the Senate.

Most of our country,  and especially the mainstream media, still act like they don't realize that Trump plans to use his masked ICE goons to  rig, steal  or cancel the midterm elections.  Trump's private army, his SS Brown Shirts, will enforce his restrictive voter ID laws, or surround the polls, or confiscate voting machines before the election, or ballots afterwards.

Anyone that thinks that Trump is not capable of doing  any of this Is foolish given his actions and statements to date.

It is clear  the  king does not intend to surrender the throne. Trump is not going gently into that good night.

What are we going to do to prevent Trump and his corrupt GOP from destroying our beloved election process?

Is there a game plan to play offense against the authoritarian GOP regime before Nov 2026?

I have a modest proposal.

How about blue states, after banding together and after getting voter approval, collecting their constituents ' federal taxes, and holding them in escrow until after the midterm elections?

This proposed plan is

especially valid now that the Supreme Court has blessed proposition 50 in California as legal and Virginia's Supreme Court has approved a similar ballot proposal. While those initiatives dealt with redistricting, they showed that blue states can coordinate their actions to combat an authoritarian GOP effort to suppress voting. Ironically, the proposed "Confederacy of Blue States" actiing in unison may help preserve our Union and protect our democracy.

All the blue states should act in unison after a voter initiative, to collect their constituents' federal taxes, and hold them in escrow until after the midterm elections are over and have been conducted fairly, legally and constitutionally. The blue states should make it clear they have every intention of remitting the funds to the Federal Government if the midterms and the results are conducted properly.

In other words, threaten  to defund Trump before the midterm elections in order to prevent him from stealing them.

While I realize this proposal goes beyond modest, and legally and logistically is extremely difficult, it is now time for the Democratic Party to start thinking outside the box in order to combat Trump and his corrupt anti-democracy GOP sycophants.

If anyone has a better preventative game plan to enact before the midterms , I'd love to hear it.

Your rhetorical question is out of date to the point that it's getting click-baity. 'Our Democracy' implies that same democracy that we had before Trump. That democracy died. There will definitely be something else to come, but we've got a lot to discover before that happens, so it's premature to discuss exactly what form of government that will be.

We'll find out if the rubes making up the classic 'Trump base' really do have a taste for civil war and breaking the nation apart, on their second attempt (and this time without clear lines). The other is 'how shall a 21st Century society effectively deal with those citizens to are unwilling or unable to inform themselves about what matters most to the nation?' Because, if we don't, if we kick the same can down the road when Reconstruction collapsed, the future will be a mere cyclical repeat of the past.

Regardless, the previous democracy is already long gone.
