I was just asked to be C-SPAN to talk about what the national mood is this July Fourth holiday and what’s the most important issue in America right now.
And I said we’re at a crossroads about what kind of country we’re going to be. The majority of us want to stay a democracy and continue making progress, but we are facing a president that is desperately trying to transform America into an autocracy.
But I wanted to record another message for all of you in our Lincoln Loyal community, because I want to let you know that you’re not alone right now. (And I did it right in my buggy backyard, so at one point, you can see one land in my hair).
It’s the day after Independence Day and I know it was a somber one. Last year, the holiday hit right after the Supreme Court ruled that Trump had absolute immunity for “official acts” during his presidency, which helped pave the way for him to return to the White House.
This year, we had to endure Trump signing what we call the MAGA Murder Budget into law on the Fourth of July, adding insult to injury. This bill could result in over 20 million people losing their health care. It makes Trump’s autocratic executive orders the law of the land. And it provides an obscene amount of money — $175 billion to be exact — for ICE so that it can fully transform into an American gestapo.
This is a discouraging time for all of us in the pro-Democracy movement. I feel it. We showed up and marched and protested against this bill. We called our Senators and Representatives and told them the damage it would do to our communities and our country.
And not enough of them listened. But it’s not too late. The next big protests are on July 17 across the country and I’ll be there, marching along side you in Michigan. And so many of folks in our Lincoln Project/Lincoln Square family will proudly be at other demonstrations across the country, just like we were at the No Kings protests. We can still use our voices. We can still exercise our constitutional rights. We can still make Trump and Republicans pay for their horrendous bill.
I want to thank you for being part of this fight. I want to thank you for being part of our Lincoln Loyal community and invite you to join us as a free or paid subscriber if you haven’t already. We want to reach as many people as possible, so we keep many of our articles and shows available to all. If you are able to become a paid subscriber, you help us ensure that sure that people who are hurting in Trump’s economy are still able to get quality, independent journalism.
I’ve been a journalist for almost 25 years and I’m proud of the in-depth interviews and insightful commentary we publish. Unlike the mainstream media, we will never bow to Trump. We can’t be bought or bullied.
But what I’m most grateful for is the community that we’re building, especially in our live chats. Just yesterday, two of our subscribers, Kenneth and David, were in the chat during “Behind the Numbers” with Rick & Andrew Wilson and mentioned getting an email from the Social Security Administration celebrating Trump’s bill that was chock full of disinformation. We asked you to send us that — and within a couple minutes, the document was in my inbox.
We can’t do this at Lincoln Square without you.
We are all in the fight of our lives and it’s an honor to stand beside you all. You are the reason why I never lose hope. So let’s all celebrate this country that we love so much on this holiday weekend. And let’s keep standing up for our Democracy together.
