Can Dems Finally Win in Texas? | First Draft with Susan J. Demas and The Nation's John Nichols

There's a pathway for Democrats to take the Senate — something that was unthinkable a year ago. And Lone Star State could be key.

The 2026 midterm season kicked off on Tuesday, with primaries in Texas and North Carolina, and a special election in Arkansas. John Nichols, Executive Editor with The Nation, joined Susan J. Demas on First Draft to comb through some of the results.

They focused on Texas, where Republicans are heading to a lengthy and very expensive runoff election between incumbent Senator John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Meanwhile, Democrats are coalescing around their nominee, state Rep. James Talarico.

So could Dems finally crack the code and win statewide in Texas after a decades-long drought? Well, even Trump seems nervous.
