He explains in a clear and cogent way the dichotomy between truly following the TEACHINGS of Jesus and the fast-trackers who look on Jesus as the vicarious atoner for our sinful lives, if we just toe their definition of the line until he shows up to set things right at the end of days, which never seems to arrive in spite of their prognostications. The law of karma teaches that we souls are each responsible for our own actions and it is up to us to set things right, to balance the scales even if it takes thousands of lifetimes.

Even tho I left organized religion 15 years ago (hearing a priest advertise his “cure gay men of their disease” camp at his residence was the final straw), I raced out to buy Separation of Church and Hate and it is a fascinating & enlightening read. I was taught never bring politics into church no matter what keep it separate, but equal! The pharasee’s actually gave Jesus to the Romans.
Unfortunately, John Fugelsang's understanding of Christian history is wrong. Jesus Christ was created by the Jewish writer Josephus at the behest of Roman Emperor Titus Flavius. He needs to read Caesar's Messiah by Joseph Atwill
Christian Nationalists are greedy for power. They connect to the institutional church, not the spiritual church Jesus spoke of. Jesus is just a tool for them to evade responsibility for their sins. The leadership is sociopathic as exemplified by Trump, so they simply dismiss the moral teachings as irrelevant after the absolution from invoking Jesus.

If you want to read a book that tells you the highlights of Jesus's teachings *without* plowing through the Gospels, this is a great and wise, and kind, book.
For those of you who haven't taken an adult interest in the Bible or the Gospels, it's not a book that clearly explains itself to you all the time. For the scholars there is a lot of scholarship involved: Translating from ancient (and very different) languages... Different nuances of words long ago. Social and political factors of 2,000+ years ago that we don't know about. Jesus frequently challenged the norms of his society; the powerful and comfortable today would still attack him.
I don't know how evangelical pastors are educated. Some just put up the sign on their "church" and preach (from their gut, presumably) without ever learning a word of classical Greek or Latin or Aramaic.
This was best Christian Nationalism discussion that I have heard. Discovered our library system has John Fugelsang' book and I checked it out. I like the way John lifts up the fight, Hope his book is as good as words.
