Turning their own tactics against them to secure a decisive defeat

Yesterday was a difficult day for the fight for democracy.
We saw the Supreme Court weaken landmark voting rights laws and a former FBI Director indicted over a simple image of seashells on a beach. We watched a Defense Secretary lie under oath, refusing to say whether his loyalty lies with the President or the Constitution. We watched Florida Republicans completely disregard their own State Constitution to approve a partisan gerrymandering map that erases representation for Black voters to hand the Republican Party four more seats. At the same time, the Supreme Court upheld a heavily gerrymandered map in Texas, effectively negating any positive gains from a new redistricting map in Virginia.
Yesterday’s SCOTUS decision didn’t just strike down a congressional district in Louisiana; it erased the political power of an entire community and called it constitutional. They didn’t fix racial discrimination, they protected it. This was a choice to weaken representation, a choice to dilute votes, and a choice to tell African Americans that fairness only applies to others—that their voices don’t count.
At a time when democracy seems to be burning, the courts decided to pour an accelerant on the flames. This isn’t just about a map; it’s about control. It’s about whether the courts will allow racial discrimination to live on and prevent entire communities from holding any power. At a time when freedom of speech is under threat, history will show that when democracy asked for protection, the courts decided to turn their back.
Our foundation took a big hit. Every day, it feels like fewer and fewer people around Trump are standing up to his administration, which is exactly why we ALL need to stand up now. This is our opportunity to build something better for America and protect what remains, even as we feel like we are standing in quicksand.
It’s not hopeless. We can win this. We need to spend the next six months fighting to inform and mobilize Americans in the most crucial gerrymandered districts in Texas and Florida, in flippable districts across the country, and in conservative news deserts where right-wing corporations hold a monopoly on the airwaves and control the local narrative. We know we aren’t going to achieve this on Substack, preaching only to the choir of democracy defenders. We must do it in the digital trenches—across social media, where the most disengaged Americans form their opinions and build their political views.

It sounds impossible, but we can do it. Special elections are already showing huge gains and outright wins in districts where Trump won decisively in 2024. We can win this.
