Truly, the world is full of losers. And sometimes those losers win, which goes a long way toward explaining our current predicament. If it weren’t for a handful of winners (who often lose, sadly), we’d probably already be burning our furniture for heat.

Welcome back to Winners & Losers, your weekly guide to the losers behind the chaos, corruption, and callousness that is bringing the world down around us, and the winners who are sometimes single-handedly propping it up on our behalf.

This week was a tough one. In the past seven-odd days, we had RFK Jr. swimming in raw sewage and also spewing it in front of Congress. Pam Bondi had a banger of a week, too. She defended the world’s most obvious corruption and tried to make the case for indicting members of Congress for purely political reasons.

But those two will have their day on the Losers’ list. This week I was deeply engrossed in a story that was not covered nearly as much as it should be. We at Lincoln Square covered it last Thursday in a live interview with Andra Watkins. When you’re done here, you should check it out (see below).

And our hero is someone who will no doubt become a regular on the winner’s list.

Week 2: Mike Lee (A Loser)

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) introduced legislation called the Interstate Obscenity Definition Act (IODA) which seeks to create a federal definition of obscenity. Lee claims this bill is intended to update our obscenity laws for the internet age, so we can, for one thing, keep obscene content out of the hands of our kids.

Perhaps that’s one reason this isn’t getting the attention it deserves — who’s against keeping porn away from our kids? All kinds of studies have shown that porn has disastrous effects on the minds of adolescents, especially in an age when isolation and alienation seem to be driving everyone into the arms of anxiety and dread.

However, if that were Lee’s aim, the legislation would address this issue head-on. It doesn’t. I’m sure you’ll be surprised to learn that Mike Lee is being disingenuous. This legislation is like the origin story for The Handmaid’s Tale.
