Events in history always feel like an inevitable series of logical next steps. We know what happened and we know why it happened (for the most part). Pearl Harbor is attacked, the United States enters the war, and so on. Everything, in hindsight, aligns.

But to the moms saying goodbye to their deploying sons in 1942, there was no alignment, only the potential for loss and global catastrophe. No logical next steps. No hindsight. And no clear outcome.

We are there now. There is no clear resolution to this moment. But there will be a resolution one day. Until then, we have to at least try to see what’s happening clearly enough to make decisions in the present that result in the resolution the world needs.

Thus, Winners and Losers. History doesn’t happen without people. We need to know their names.1 Since January 20th, the chaos has been enormous and virtually impossible to keep tabs on. We attacked Iran for God’s sake! Remember that? What about DOGE? THAT HAPPENED THIS YEAR.

We are in the fog of war.

This week’s Loser is someone who is trying to erase history, and the Winner is someone who’s gathering receipts.
