Virginia res here, and opinionated political volunteer. The VA legislature has been Dem controlled for awhile, b/c Gov. Fleece-You Youngkin was soon not popular. He had been fortunate to run against Terry McAuliffe, a rich Clinton Dem re-tread who was painfully out of touch and got stomped.
VA legislators in 2025 had to jump through hoops fast to respond to the MAGA seat-grabs in TX, NC and others. Like CA the redistricting in VA is something voters decide. In red states, the legislatures rammed the changes through.
The proposed VA districts would create 5 strong-D (same) 5 D-leaning and 1 strong-R. That means Dem-candidates will have to campaign hard & smart to win 4 extra seats (they currently have 6).
VA amended its constitution in 2020 to have a bipartisan commission (not nonpartisan) handle districting.
Many people I talk with aren't happy about this move but realize we must do what we can to rein in Trump. In my now-55% red district that means getting rid of a lying lickspittle who has done absolutely nothing for the district, and has pulled the rug from under tens of thousands of rural constituents.
I think this campaign is as close as it is for 2 reasons:
1) Republicans have a helluva LOT to lose.
2) the YES campaign started off slowly with wordy, consultant-speak messaging. The redistricting measure itself is clear, the consultants messed it up. What a surprise. Not. "Level the playing field"??? and now it's "Vote Yes! Stop MAGA power grab." But momentum was lost.
In that slow (complacent?) start, the Republicans launched a masterful disinformation campaign. People got confused--a win for team red.
If the referendum passes 🤞🏼the primary will be pushed back to August 4. I look forward to having some representation in the House!
Congrats to the 77% of Hungarians who showed up to vote the fraudster Victor Orban out of office The reason was simple Orban was taking billions of taxpayer money to enrich not only his son in law and a plumber to become the wealthiest Hungarians in the country but also was paying the Nazi Republicans in this country through CPAC It’s no secret to those who study authoritarians that they all become indulgent in government funds to enrich themselves and those around them
Now Jasmine Crockett in a House committee hearing(https://bit.ly/4cp63Z3) laid out for WE the People the Nazi Republican attempt to defraud the American taxpayer of billions of dollars for inappropriate expenses while Cheeto their Supreme Leader pardons convicted felons and their obligations to those they defrauded of billions of dollars so that Cheeto can buy some campaign contributions
So what happened in Hungary is happening with a wanna be dictator in Cheeto And the Nazi Republicans fully support the fraud What’s wrong with this picture? The answer is everything
But Cheeto's strategy to hold onto power is different than Orban's which was a well oiled propaganda machine and institutional control Cheeto's strategy is election denialism and this specifically holds his now fragile coalition together Either way each of these dictators can and will be defeated by mass voter turnout Vote these criminals out of office in November and impeach Cheeto and begin rebuilding our government with safeguards so this never happens again
It is disappointing (as a former resident of Virginia) that race has been part of the battle against Democrat redistricting. My rose colored glasses were scratched in Trump 1.0 and shattered under Trump 2.0. Will racism be a permanent feature of US politics?
VA was the head office of the Confederacy, run by people who viewed themselves as aristocrats, Better Than. MAGA, which used to go by the name of Republican , will grab any weapon that comes to hand to beat people back into the 19th century.
