History doesn’t repeat but it certainly rhymes and we can learn from Weimar Germany’s experience as Snyder points out We are in the midst of a Hitlerian fascist takeover and those who participate in protests are all members of antifa So we should all celebrate being part of the movement to overthrow Cheeto’s takeover of the country and turn it into a fascist totalitarian regime

Russia is now indeed back in the position that Germany occupied in it in 1942; and that the French and then we occupied in Vietnam; and that Russia and then we occupied in Afghanistan. It was and is 'Russia's war', and Ukraine will win, but at such a tragically high cost for the people of both nations. And we are deeply complicit in that. We've all 'been here and done this' enough times to where we had to know what was our moral and practical responsibility when Putin was massing his troops for the invasion. To make of Stephen Pinker's 'Better Angels' thesis something more than a naive pipe dream for our species we should have informed Putin with absolute clarity and commitment that if he started this then we would give Ukraine exactly whatever they needed to finish it quickly. We didn't. We weaseled and prevaricated. And now here we all are.
