President Donald Trump has appointed Erika Kirk, widow of the conservative activist Charlie Kirk, to the advisory board that oversees the United States Air Force Academy, extending the presence of a prominent conservative activist network inside a body that reviews the school’s curriculum, discipline and campus climate.
The appointment places Ms. Kirk in the same oversight body her husband served on before he was killed last year and keeps a leading figure from the conservative movement involved in debates over how the academy educates and trains future military officers.
In a statement announcing the decision, the White House described the appointment as a continuation of his work.
“Charlie Kirk served proudly on the board, inspiring not only the next generation of service members, but millions around the world with his bold Christian faith, defense of the truth and deep love of country,” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales said in a statement. “Erika Kirk will continue his legacy, and be a fearless advocate for the most elite airpower force in the history of the world whose warriors keep our nation safe, strong and free.”
The Board of Visitors is a statutory advisory body that reviews the academy’s operations and campus culture. According to the academy, the board examines cadet morale, discipline, curriculum, instruction and academic methods, as well as the school’s physical facilities and finances.
Board members have access to academy officials, faculty members and cadets as they evaluate conditions on campus. Their findings and recommendations are submitted through the secretary of the Air Force to the secretary of defense and to the congressional committees that oversee the military.
