Thank you for that wonderful historical comparison of LBJ v.djy. LBJ, if not for the needless tragedy of Vietnam, would be spoken in the same breath as FDR. Both were men well ahead of their times. While you mention that today's maga, I might say social confederate, republican party, not only want to take America away from the momentous achievements of LBJ, but many want to go back to the days before women's suffrage, and the Emancipation Proclamation. The deranged, racist trump and his project 2025 overlords wants to ignore the 14th Amendment.

It's unfortunate that so many, because of a multitude of reasons, do not have an historical comparison of today v. the past. People might realize they are getting shafted by republicans, but they don't know the great battles that were fought to bring most Americans the right to vote, the safety net, labor unions, or Medicaid and Medicare. Yet most welfare states are red maga states that take in more federal tax revenues than they contribute. Republicans hate those who demand more than they contribute, but they are the epitome of that system.

So many are so ambivalent and unaware that they won't know what they have lost until it is gone. ,Much of what Americans, especially maga types, will soon be forced to realize that their fear of govt, trans people, the deep state, and other cultist fantacies were illusions, while their loss of healthcare, food assistance, natural disaster aid, and their livelihoods because of reckless tariffs and incomprehensible, clownish, economic polices are real and harmful, if not deadly.

Celebrating real progress with the anniversaries of Medicare and Voting Rights, are certainly more important than celebrating their demise under trump as he applauds his birthday military parade, bloated, embarrassing, ballroom and taxpayer funded Qatari jet overhaul. Unfortunately, America has become more a land of beer and circuses than a country propelled forward seeking and promoting real achievements that benefit us all.

Excellent article. Thank, thank you for this background on where the "good life" came from and who is dialing us back to the bad old days. Yep: you got it when you said they ask: "What would Jesus not do? Then they do it anyway."
