Thank you Evan for this article. People are tired and exhausted. I agree with you on this. I hope the Senate defeates the clean cr. I admire those people out in the cold giving hope to America. Please donate to Lincoln Square and donate to New from Underground.

Please, get to the point sooner, you exhaust us with too many words.

This is really good. At open mic tonight, I’m dressing as a pirate. And talking about distracting myself from the horror and burnout. Yes, these are related. Argh. 🏴‍☠️

I agree with parts of this assessment but not fully. No doubt there are plenty of people who are overwhelmed and checked out. However, to assert that Americans as a rule are tuning out doesn't seem accurate. If anything, I believe more and more people are getting enraged to rid us of this regime instead of being disengaged. Because trump, miller, and the rest of that crew only have the instinct to double-down, I am pretty confident that they are accelerating the collapse of their attempts to rule by fiat.

You all are right- we’ve been through stuff before- so it’s up to us as well as other generations- maybe more- to show others what to do. This article explains our common feelings but to me is not looking at what’s going on in the streets. These numbers are growing and they VOTE. Daily more protests and wavering Republicans. People are making the difference. Frankly I think this article is not one to encourage people with.

I don't feel weak but I do feel disgusted. Imagine if you would if Kamala had made it into the White House. Yes there might have been yet another "insurrection" by HIM but all this other crap and chaos would not be happening. All of the lies, all of the misinformation is just horrible. I need to hear a little more TRUTH and a lot less lies and the one thing about lies is they DO catch up to the the people that tell them in the long run.

The exhaustion also comes from all the emails, publications, etc., that attempt to address why we are worn down.

I'm not exhausted, I'm pissed, and so are roughly ten of thousands of people in every state, even deep red states, out in the streets protesting against this regime. DHS isn't "minimizing" what we all have witnessed, it is flat out LYING. Greg Bovino is the first casualty of the pressure now being put on the regime from public outcry. He won't be the last.

Excellent essay. Thank you.

Knowing the truth helps us see.

The news is exhausting, overwhelming. But, we need to look. We need to see the horror, the gross indifference by these gross magas, and the delight at the end result. I am outraged and angry over the actions taken every day. We say, "This is it, this is the line. There will be consequences now."

There never, ever is.

This is necessary anger and outrage. We need these feelings to motivate things to change. It's necessary anger.

We have to push the change we want to see, fueled by the anger and outrage we are faced with every day.

This won't stop. The Minnesotans won't "give up" their state. Neither will any of the of blue states. We just keep resisting.

For those of us who dig deep, trying to understand what is happening in all its complexity, the task can become overwhelming. We do need mental breaks. But I also see the opposite in my psychotherapy practice: clients who have partners who have chosen to insulate themselves, to be low-information citizens, to “avoid negativity.” This is profoundly hurtful and isolating for the partners who are distressed and want to talk about their fear, only to be told to “think happy thoughts.” (That brand of pop psychology is utter bullshit, for the record.) For the insulated partners, I work on increasing their distress tolerance so they can engage with their informed partner in more effective, empathic ways. If more people could come out of hiding and tolerate enough distress to become informed and involved, we might get ourselves to the 3.5% needed to end this regime.

Thank you, Martha. You really highlight what is so needed — the ability to live and respond from integrity and yes, joy, while also feeling sorrow and anger at the cruelty and suffering around us. I have friends who feel isolated with partners and friends and family who dismiss or try to shut down their feelings and withhold support. I have tried to widen the perspective of some who say “ think happy thoughts” or “I don’t pay attention to politics” by reminding that “politics” derives from the word “polis”, meaning the community of people living together. If one states they are “not interested in politics” or “let’s not bring up politics”, I ask if they are instead interested in talking about how we want to live with one another, whether that be in a family, a neighborhood, a nation, or the world. This often changes the direction of the conversation or may offer a larger context for a meaningful dialogue.

Thank you, Mr. Fields. I have to once again acknowledge bannon’s “flood the zone” theory of politics. This theory isn’t original to bannon. And I also have to acknowledge kellyanne who, of course, flogged “alternative facts”. djt and his co-conspirators are living off this amorality. The dregs of our society are murdering the best of our society and bulldozing our democracy.

How would you encapsulate this message for a highway overpass sign? Maybe "Be Brave - They Want Us To Give Up"? Or "It's OK to be Tired"?

Maxine Hunter's avatar

Exhaustion of violence. Yes, violence for real is around us. ICE on the streets with permission to murder us. It's not a movie where the Magnificent Seven gallop in to save the town.. It's real. There is no rest because even new fiction shows are violent and gross providing no rest for the weary. Even football now looks more like violent combat than a tough game. (I must be getting old, football has always been combative--but I remember when a player could reach a hand to an opposing player to help him up, etc. I remember L. Taylor leaping up after he tackled J. Theismann yelling for help for Theismann. No celebrating the hit, but concern because he heard the bone or bones crack. ) Sorry to go on, but Evan you are correct. I even keep wondering if the little Geico Gecko will get stepped on. GHUA. Thanks Evan for all you do.
