I have a novel coming out in January based loosely on my parents' tales about Chicago Met Lab and Oak Ridge, Fission: A Novel of Atomic Heartbreak. I agree that the focus on Los Alamos has been greater than telling some of the other stories.
Thanks for a great interview, Stuart. My father, David Hawkins, was Oppenheimer's assistant during the War, and wrote the official history of wartime Los Alamos. I was 4 when we left, but still have some early memories. My interview was done by the Atomic Heritage Museum in 2016.
Not surprisingly Bob Kiyosaki, an investment author and businessman, whose life mission has been to aid Americans to wade through the quagmire of investing is predicting another Great Depression History doesn’t repeat itself but it certainly rhymes
The Smoot Hawley tariff act of 1930’s mirrors Cheeto’s reckless tariff policy which is creating unsettling uncertainty with American small businesses This taken with the continuing decline in the purchasing power of the dollar along with an equity market that is being held up by big tech stocks is laying the ground for foreign investors in not supporting our debt by not buying our bonds
If foreign investors stop buying our bonds, bond yields will have to rise making the debt interest insurmountable with a subsequent collapse of the dollar For this reason, it’s certainly prudent for those who want to protect what wealth they have by purchasing gold and silver bullion The above economic scenario will not occur soon but clearly will occur during Cheeto’s remaining tenure
This is so in my wheelhouse. I graduated from Mississippi State in 1980 with a BS in nuclear engineering and then got my PhD at the University of Michigan in the same field. I have worked my whole life in the DOE complex, first at Oak Ridge and then retired from Los Alamos. The story of the Manhattan project is known in the nuclear world, but not so in the general public. Living in Los Alamos and Oak Ridge as I have, I have met scientists who were involved and/or connected to those involved and walked through buildings that are now part of history, the cyclotrons in Oak Ridge and the Slotin building in Los Alamos. If I had not been a nuclear scientist, I would have liked to be a historian.
I truly enjoy Stuart's books and interviews such as this one. I have read The Only Plane in the Sky and ordered this one, not just for me but for others as gifts.
Fascinating interview with Mr. Graff. I try not to allow myself to think of WHY Trump appears to be , at best, attacking what made the USA such a powerhouse? It has been just over six months of his 2nd term. What will be left of us by November 2028?
I really enjoyed your interview with Garrett Graff, whose deep dives into the history and context are so valuable, especially during these times. I've added his book to my read list. But it's also you, Stuart, who has a profound sense of history and reflecting upon it to bring relevance and the perspective to what we are seeing today. You and Rick Wilson. Thank you.
Love Maine, missing it now. Hopefully the leaves are turning. Leaf peeping is fun. Smell of summer grass brings delight to myself. My friends are always surprised to hear from me. Have a nice weekend everyone.
It is no secret that Donald Trump lusts after the Nobel Peace Prize. While such a prize is hopefully far out of reach in a sane world, a different campaign to award him a usually coveted award should spark some widespread support.
We should all get behind an effort to award him the PULITZER PRIZE FOR FICTION [live action, continuous fiction?] based upon his ongoing narrative of the world and our history.
His embrace of alternative facts, erasure of historical figures and scientific facts, embrace of conspiratorial and fantastical theories, creative descriptions of his colleagues, rivals and other prominent figures has demonstrated a redefinition of and superior commitment to the genre of fiction.
This was a great interview. Oral History is very important. Right after the chat--I signed up to get Garrett's new book from our public library. I have Stuart's book, The Conspiracy to End America. Back when Resolute Square was started up, we had the chance to order the book. So I did. I recommend it also. Thanks for reposting the live interview.
I’ve read most of what Graff has written. His book about 9/11 was particularly good. I this book on my Kindle and am really looking forward to starting it tomorrow.
Just finished this book and review it on my Substack https://leslierschoverphd147820.substack.com/p/nuclear-fiction-newsletter-issue-1fa

Splendid interview.
For the first time in my 70+ years I am moved to read his work on the horrific damage to civilians and precious ancestry gone forever.
Wonderful discussion of allies in the greatest era of military and US strength. This sounds like a great read!

As a child I didn't realize how important history is to our present times. To me history was over and done, not a continuum.
Great interview. Fascinating unknown history. THANK YOU BOTH.

My parents met in Oak Ridge during the manhattan project. I grew up there.
I got my copy!
