Watergate was still very fresh. 'nam was a still festering open wound. Gerald Ford was POTUS and he had gutpunched the nation with his pardon of Nixon. So we had a lot of personal celebrations.
Friends and I went to the Oregon coast and sat up on a clifftop where we could see fireworks displays along the coast in the little Oregon coastal burgs. That, for me, was a definite celebration of We, the People, having a July 4th that was under our control and not the government's.
Had we only known then what was awaiting us 50 years up the timeline, just think how hard we would have worked to avoid it. Or, had we known that in 1976, 2026 was already under attack from RWNJs who ran under various aliases, I wonder if anyone would have believed it.
I still laugh at the New Yorker cartoon that has the dog circling the equipment shed calling the hoe a hoe and the hoe calling the dog a bitch. Thank god we are perfect, eh? The next best cartoon is the one where the ditzy woman is a wine store saying I don’t remember the name but it was a good wine. Cheers!

His head is on straight, he has a wealth of knowledge and experience (although they should make him an Admiral immediately!), he loves our country and, more importantly, he has empathy and compassion towards his fellow Americans. As I was watching the primary results last night I was struck with the thousands upon thousands of voters who were voting for Nazi Republicans who as leader of the CNPP(Christian Nationalist Pedo Party) brazenly corrupts, lies incessantly, shows by his actions he cares little for the American people he serves, and is a threat to the country’s national security.
So not only candidates are aligned with this kind of behavior but have either morally accepted the facts that this is what they stand for as a person or they use a useful tool called denial to rid themselves of guilt of what they represent.
Let’s get this straight. There are candidates and voters who morally align themselves with a political party that stands for outright corruption at the federal/state level, is remarkably racist and bigoted, and is ok with having their taxpayer dollars fleeced to support an illegal war and pay for a ballroom that nobody wants. Perhaps wealthy Republicans don’t care about corruption as long as they can buy expensive homes and take care of their own selfish needs. Screw the country!
How can this be, that a part of our democratic society is so morally depraved? How can it be that part of our democratic society blesses its demise into a feckless dictatorship and willing to throw away their freedoms that for 250y people have died for? There needs to be some serious reflection and introspection for who WE the People are and what WE stand for.
