My husband and I went to a No Kings rally in Pittsburgh today, along with more than 5,000 others. It was a kind of sugar high, with great energy and high hopes. And then came the crash when we returned home and heard a US Marine had detained a demonstrator in LA, a legislator and her husband were killed, and two others shot and in critical condition. But we are a more diverse country, a relatively more educated country. a relatively more optimistic people that 1930's Germany. And we have already fought one civil war against oppressors. I think we are ready to fight another, if necessary, to protect what we hold dear. Fight, and win.

That book excerpt was chilling; I must get that book and read it. I have both of yours and love them, especially “It Was All a Lie”.

Frankly, I don’t have a lot of hope for our republic. From the apathy to the general civic ignorance to the racism, selfishness and greed..... was it Thomas Jefferson or Benjamin Franklin who said that people get the government they deserve? And for a democracy to continue the people must have a certain level of both

knowledge and virtue.

That doesn’t describe today’s America.

As Ben Franklin noted when asked, what do we have, a monarchy or a republic, he answered, 'A republica, if you can keep it.' It seems as if trump, maga, and most republicans are ready to destroy the republic in favor of a putinesque dictatorship.

The rotting of the republican mind since Reafan has only increased in speed this past trump hell decade. The only good thing to come of this rot is that the rot is turning on each other. trump v.musk is just the start. fox news and the right wing nutjob, trump propaganda outlets keeping showing the same image og one car set ablaze in LA, characterizing the area of eight million Americans as a hellscape of violence and chaos.

It's interesting that these Pravda networks have memory holed j/6, militia gatherings at state capitals threatening to shoot anyonr who tried to stop them, trump's good people on both sides rally in Charlottesville where a deranged maga plowed into a peaceful crowd killing the forgotten Heather Heyer while maga worships the tragic death of insurrectionist Ashli Babbitt.

We need more Padillas and fewer Schumers. More AOC, less boring, cowering dems. I hope No King's Day becomes a national holiday at some point. People need constant reminders that democracy is not a given and that history did not begin with the last 30-second tiktok clip.

There was nothing like the protests coming June 14 in Germany after Hitler took power. Nothing Trump has done is even close to Nazi Germany in 1933. Most of civil society is standing up. He would break it all if he could, but he hasn't yet.

It is within our power to turn this around. Trump will fail. The actuarial tables are more ruthless than he can ever be.

But we will pay a great cost from the damage he does. What people need to realize, in my opinion, is that this struggle goes on after Trump. Maybe for a generation. And this fight has to be won in a country which has one functional, if flawed, political party, and a Republican Party which really no longer exists.

Stuart, it is indeed hard to sleep realizing where we are as a country. The past week's behavior of the "ruling class" was and is unbelievable. But believe it I do. We must all stand up to this nightmare reality. Yes, Win or Lose we must stand up against what is happening.

Unless the question "Has MAGA Declared War On America?" is a trick question, the answer is indisputably yes. All five elements that you listed have their specific grievances with modern America and are enraged at the mere existence of a country (and world) that they don't like and refuse to recognize.

IMO all these people revel in an endless and empty immaturity that demands absolute obedience from others they feel are beneath them. The financiers (read plutocrats) want to re-create the neo-feudal order of the so-called Golden Age. The legalists want to re-implement a legal regime based in Lochner era and Jim Crow jurisprudence. The GOP went whole hog with the Southern Strategy and expanded from there, the Propagandists are simply the latest iteration of Father Coughlin hate-filled mendacity. and the shock troops may as well be the modern day Klan for all we know.

These folks may be in power for now, but they are trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube. They will ultimately fail. What's required on our part is an unwavering focus and rhetoric attacking their treason and their vile violation of decency, democracy, and the very idea of America. What I am proposing is difficult but it is necessary to save the Republic.

I am married to a nevermore Republican. I grieve for those who grieve for the loss of a party they once respected. Above all, I grieve for all of us who are sane enough to recognize what is going on. We are in grave danger, and I do not know how we emerge from this.

The Conspiracy To End America... was prescient. An outstanding book. All we can do is fight. I was a registered Republican since 1988 but now I am a Nevermore Republican. Nazis and traitors all.

I am sickened by the Trump Regime. Trump at Fort Bragg — where my father, a proud member of the 82nd Airborne once stood — grieves me like a white hot poker to my heart. I pray that America will survive.

And my husband, an equally proud Green Beret eventually with the 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces, Vietnam. We have to remember all of these military who’ve given so much for our incredible country, not succumbing to the slanders of this Regime. God rest their souls.
