I'm a 73 year old Scot living in Spain. From boyhood I've admired the United States. I grew up to become a historian and learned about your journey to a progressive, liberal democracy. Like every right-thinking European I noted with alarm the ascendency of Donald Trump from 2015 on but was reassured by the guardrails - the people, the institutions - that constrained his worst impulses during his first term.
After the Jan 6 storming of the Capitol I realised that Trump was an existential threat - not just to yourselves but to the world at large.
Barely one year into his second term Trump has metastasised into the recognisable type of an authoritarian dictator which we thought we'd consigned to the rubbish bin of history in the middle of the last century (slightly later with Franco).
But he and his acolytes have been busy cheerleading for the far-right in Europe and the Middle East; Orban in Hungary, the AFD in Germany, and the Reform party in the UK are just a few of those who take cheer from his most egregious behaviour. Netanyahu in Israel is sustained by Trump and his administration while they conduct a slow-moving genocide of the Palestinian people.
So what can I do? There's little point in spilling on to the streets here in my small, Spanish town and all my friends are broadly in agreement with me, so there;s no-one to convince.
What I can do, small scale as it is, is to boycott all American goods and services where possible and to stop taking American holidays until this sickening episode in history ends. Our circle of friends agree and I think the data shows that Europeans are turning away in droves from engaging with the USA. It is a tragedy and one Trump's making. May you be delivered from him and his corrupting policies soon.

As a family member's mental capacity slowly melted, we got involved with Alzheimer's groups. Universally, diminished mental capacity also meant a diminished awareness of that loss.

It’s no secret that there’s $$ to be had by the private prison system industry and DHS has contracted with many communities in the US to hold ICE concentration camps My own experience with the fourth largest US detention center on the Tacoma tideflats where 52 men have died has been the site of many of our community protests
But as Rachel Maddow reported last night multiple communities across the country are now pushing back against ICE trying to establish concentration camps in their cities and shutting the agency down This is what it looks like for WE the People to not only protest in the streets but to tell the current Nazi regime ”not in my town”
One step further What would it look like if Tacoma demanded that ICE leave its community??

I believe this administration will keep him on though, they kept Lindsey Halligan on and a judge ruled she must leave. The Senate perhaps wants to reform ice, no way, they won’t happen. Impeachment of Secretary Noem. Let’s hope SCOTUS gets act together. Justice is not for sale by any means. Murderer is just plain wrong. Dictators need total control and loyalty from their armed services. It seems like Trump and Miller have the complete obedience and loyalty of the army, navy and Air force. This allows the Maggots to call them to attack the citizenry when ICE Gestapo have accomplished the objective of starting a Civil War with murders and brutality. What if ICE, as Rick Wilson suggests, opens fire on protestors and commits mass murder?
You CANNOT trust Trump and his regime. They LIE all the time. Stephen Miller is STILL in the background calling the "shots"! Stephen Miller is PURE EVIL!
