Mystal has long been advocating for an expansion of SCOTUS after the Mitch McConnell shenanigans put two conservative Federalist recommended judges on the Court leading to a lopsided partisan judicial politic In arguing the case Mystal makes the cogent point that expansion would lead to a partisan expansion where future elected administrations would simply continue to expand based on which party was in power The appropriate response would be “that’s just fine because it would dilute the power of these SCOTUS judges”
As Thomas gets ready to take his motor home into the sky and Alito retires to his upside down flag house at the beach, Cheeto is hoping Bove will be front and center on his list to fill those vacancies All the more reason to expand this partisan money backed court
Thank you for the excellent review of trump's collapse and the historical references to the Civil War. As Lincoln had to fire many an incompetent or timid general before finding Grant to lead the Union Army, maybe Americans and, especially democrats in congress, had to experience two disastrous trump terms to get the full appreciation of the damage caused by ineffectual and corrupt leadership. While trump and his seditious maga army may not surrender at one particular location, as the Confederates did at Appomattox, they may slither back under their rocks and end their destructive, anto democratic ways. Many a battle still needs to be fought before the war for freedom and normalcy is .won, but there are signs of a shifting political battlefield that can change the course of history for the good.,

November 2025! Yes, what a month it was! Crazy, insidious actions by Trump, but at least one chuckle concerning Trump's new crush, Mamdani. Good take on the situation. Loved the historic background. Mr. Mcelvaine has written an accurate, and for those of us who oppose everything Trump stands for, encouraging account of what has happened since November. And then we get to the final paragraph of his essay: "If the Trump authoritarians see that they could not possibly win a fair election, they will do everything they can think of to prevent a real election from happening." Exactly. You can pretty much take this to the bank--this is exactly what this gang of lickspittles and authoritarian creeps will do. There's no other way for them to retain the power they now hold. So yes, the coming year will indeed be a struggle to preserve American democracy.
