Lindsey Olin Graham, 71, United States Senator from South Carolina, died on July 11, 2026, at his home on Capitol Hill after a brief illness.

While many Republican leaders abandoned the principles they had spent their careers professing, Senator Graham remained true to his convictions. A close friend of John McCain, he carried forward McCain’s belief that America comes before party and that character matters more than ambition. In an era that demanded courage, Lindsey Graham found it. He will be remembered as one of the few Republicans willing to risk power rather than surrender principle.

That could have been Lindsey Graham’s obituary.

It won’t be.

Instead, his legacy will be defined by one of the most complete moral reversals in modern American politics. Few public figures diagnosed Donald Trump more accurately than Lindsey Graham did during the 2016 Republican primary.

He warned America:

“If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed... and we will deserve it.”

He called Trump:

“A race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot.”

He said:

“He doesn’t represent my party. He doesn’t represent the values that the men and women who wear the uniform are fighting for.”

He dismissed Trump as someone who “doesn’t have a clue about anything.”

He declared:

“I’d rather lose without Donald Trump than try to win with him.”

And perhaps most important, he concluded:

“I cannot in good conscience support Donald Trump because I do not believe he has displayed the judgment and temperament to serve as Commander in Chief.”

That phrase—“in good conscience”—deserves to be remembered.

Because Lindsey Graham eventually supported Donald Trump anyway.

He simply chose to do it in bad conscience.

That is what makes his story tragic. Graham wasn’t fooled. He wasn’t deceived. He wasn’t one of the people who never saw the danger. He saw it before almost everyone else. He described it in language more forceful than most Democrats ever used.

Then he surrendered to it.

What a waste.

Lindsey Graham possessed genuine political gifts. He was quick-witted, funny, self-deprecating, and exceptionally skilled. He understood national security. He could work across party lines. He had earned a reputation as someone whose word mattered.

In the 2008 Republican primary campaign, he was a constant shadow to John McCain when I was working for Mitt Romney. In the way of campaign life, we spent a lot of time together in debate-holding rooms and on the sidelines of the many cattle-call events. I liked him. Everybody liked Lindsey. His dedication to John McCain seemed deeply personal and rooted in shared values.

He could have been remembered as one of the heirs to McCain’s belief that country comes first.

Instead, he chose to become one more broken trophy on Donald Trump’s shelf.

As Graham, Mitch McConnell, and others of their generation leave the public stage, there will be a temptation to soften history. Admirers will argue they had no choice. That accommodation was necessary. That survival required compromise.

History should reject those excuses.

Political pressure explains behavior. It does not erase responsibility.

The Republican Party I joined taught that personal responsibility was not simply a campaign slogan but a moral obligation. If you make a choice, you own the consequences of that choice.

Lindsey Graham made his choice.

He chose to support a man he had already concluded lacked the judgment and temperament to be president. He chose to normalize conduct he had once condemned. He chose loyalty to one man over loyalty to the principles he had spent decades defending.

Give to Lincoln Square

That is his legacy.

Not because Donald Trump defeated Lindsey Graham.

Because Lindsey Graham defeated Lindsey Graham.

In the end, the defining test of his life was not whether he recognized the danger. He did.

The test was whether he would stand by what he already knew to be true.

He failed.

And that failure should stand as a warning to everyone who enters public life. Character is not measured by the truths you speak when they cost nothing. It is measured by the truths you continue to defend when they cost everything.

You can always say no.

Lindsey Graham knew that.

He simply chose not to.
